Tips for Conquering Canker Sores

June 28, 2019

Suffering from canker sores can be downright irritating. Not only can they be painful, they can make eating, drinking and brushing an unpleasant and painful task. Especially if you get them often, you may be wondering what you can do to for a little relief.

Let’s start by saying that minor canker sores usually don’t need treatment and resolve on their own. For major canker sores, your dentist may suggest another treatment option. And although they are common, it’s best to consult with your dentist before starting treatment first.

Your dentist may suggest trying:

  1. Topical products: there are over the counter (OTC) pastes, gels and creams that can help with pain relief. If applied early on, they may accelerate the healing process.
  2. Mouth rinses: For multiple canker sores, some dentists may prescribe a mouth rinse to reduce pain and inflammation.
  3. Cauterization: For major sores, your dentist may use an instrument that chemically burns tissue of the sore.
  4. Home remedies: For minor sores, you can find relief by rinsing with salt water and baking soda, applying bits of ice, avoiding acidic foods, or using an OTC product.
  5. Oral medications: For severe sores that do not respond to treatment, there are oral medications that may be used when prescribed by your dentist.

Most importantly, if a canker sore does not resolve in a couple weeks, follow up with your dentist to get it checked in a timely manner.
